Spanish I  |  Spanish II

Spanish I                                  Course Number: 351          Prerequisites: none


Course Length: Minimum of 126 hours of instructional time per year.

In alignment with the Massachusetts World Languages Framework and the Boston Public Schools World Languages Citywide Learning Standards, the Spanish 1 course is designed to allow students to complete all stage 1 activities in the six areas of the city curriculum: culture, connecting, listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Students are expected to perform with confidence in tasks of increasing difficulty.

Required Products:

Students will compile an autobiography over the year containing personal information, family relationships, likes and dislikes, as well as photos and/or illustrations, for insertion into a folder to be passed on to the next year’s teacher.

Grading and Assessments:

Assessment is an ongoing process and should include the use of multiple measures to determine what students have learned in the course.  It assesses accuracy but emphasizes conversational proficiency. Students’ grades will be determined, in whole, by their academic performance on a variety of proficiency tasks and assignments including:

  • oral tests and tasks such as responding orally to a variety of stimuli
  • written grammar tests, written compositions, and written responses to picture cues
  • demonstrating aural comprehension through movement, drawings, and following of directions.
  • reading and reciting aloud

Spanish II                      Course Number: 352              Prerequisites: Spanish 1

Course Length: Minimum of 126 hours of instructional time per year.

In alignment with the Massachusetts World Languages Framework and the Boston Public Schools World Languages Citywide Learning Standards, the Spanish 2 course is designed to allow students to complete all stage 1 activities and most of stage 2 activities in the six areas of the city curriculum: culture, connecting, listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Students are expected to perform with confidence in tasks of increasing difficulty.

Required Products:

Students will prepare a portfolio focusing on one country, containing information on a variety of aspects of life in that country and plans for a trip, a passport, an itinerary.
